I have the honour to transmit for your
consideration the enclosed copies of applications from Mr.
W. Chatham, Director of Public Works, and Mr. Bruce Shepherd,
Land Officer, for remuneration in connection with work done
October, 1983, and

by them for the Praya Reclamation.
2.
There is no doubt that both Officers have
had a great deal of extra work over and above their ordinary
duties, throw upon them on account of the Reclamation es-
pecially in its earlier stage in the case of Mr. Shepherd,
though in the Land Office in recent years such work might
fairly be included in the ordinary routine of the Department.
On this latter account therefore I do not consider that Mr.
Wakeman has any good claim for consideration.
3.
After consultation with Sir C. P. Chater,
who informed me that he feels sure the Marine Lo tholders would
have no objection, I have come to the conclusion that a bonus
of $2,000 to each Officer would meet the case especially if
the Reclamation is carried out at the estimated cost.
4.
The excess caused by a sum of $4,000 when
spread over the whole Reclamation would be so small in the
